Pearls do not have a universal grading system like diamonds.  The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) values pearls according to 7 standards, called the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors which are- Pearl species, shape, surface, color, nacre thickness, matching and luster.  Luster, or the reflective quality, is probably the most important of those qualities.  Saltwater pearls have more luster than freshwater pearls.

Pearls are not always worn on special occasions. The fashion statement can be as casual as a toggle-clasp bracelet worn with a pair of favorite jeans or as dressy as a pair of filigree dangling earrings worn with a strapless cocktail dress. You will find that there are many pearl jewelry styles that can be worn in a variety of ways.
