AGS And Diamond Cut

Learning about the four C’s in diamond grading is essential when looking for the right diamond. Clarity, color and carat weight are three Cs of diamond value usually understood by most who are shopping for a diamond. What might be confusing for some people however, is the difference between cut and shape.

Diamond grading refers to cut as the proportions and finish of a diamond which in turn are what determines the diamond's fire. The shape of a diamond is basically the outline of the diamond looking from the top down such as round, princess or emerald.

When light enters through the crown of the diamond it bounces around inside the lower pavilion and finally exits back out through the crown. This produces the fire, brilliance and sparkling effect, by returning as much light to the eye as possible. In order for the light to effectively do this the diamonds must be cut to exact dimensions and even sometimes may sacrifice its weight.

The American Gem Society Laboratories or AGS was the first to provide cut grading for round brilliant diamonds, giving consumers an independent, unbiased and complete examination of all the factors that conclude the value of that diamond.
